Consistency in Training = Higher Competition Totals


This sounds like it would be obvious. I assure you, it must be said. The higher your success rate is in training the more likely you are to make lifts in competition.


Let’s dig deeper.


Here is what most people think (and are not necessarily wrong):

1. I want you to push yourself during training.

2. I want your weights to increase over time.

3. I want you to be able to hit PRs.


Here are those same notes but with more depth and focus:

1. I want you to push yourself just to the edge of technical breakdown. Make it challenging but successful and capable of change. Example: “That snatch caught a bit forward.” Stay at that weight and make the correction. Don’t go up because it was barely successful.



2. I want your weights to increase but it doesn’t have to every single training day or week. Don’t sacrifice a good training session because you are so worried about increasing the weight. You can also increase by 1kg instead of 3-5kg. What I really want is that your overall successful training weights increase each cycle. This has a large correlation to an increase in competition totals.


3. I want you to hit PRs and I want to celebrate them with you. The reality is that PRs will start to hit less often the longer you train. Don’t get too hung up. You might be hitting a 95% snatch every time it is programmed where in the previous year you only hit that weight 1-2 times. That is huge success and now a number that we can feel confident about attempting in competition. To me, this is just as good as a PR!
